SUMMARY:Asian Pacific American Contributions Through Railroad Exhibit Series -Part Three
DESCRIPTION:Association of Chinese Americans Celebrates Asian Pacific American Contributions Through Railroad Exhibit \nBetween September and October\, 2019\, the Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) will be hosting a traveling exhibit on the building of the Transcontinental Railroad and the role of Chinese laborers in its construction.  Titled “The Chinese and the Iron Road: Building the Transcontinental\,” the seven-panel exhibit is the result of a collaborative effort between the Chinese Historical Society of America and the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project by Stanford University.  It was developed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railway in the U.S. and to bring to light the critical contribution of Chinese labor to this amazing engineering achievement. \nThe exhibit will be on display at the Detroit Main Public Library September 10-October 15. A replica will be on view at the Chinese Community Center October 19-20\, and at Glen Oaks Country Club on October 25 as a special feature of ACA’s 47th anniversary gala.  An opening reception will be held on Wednesday\, September 11\, 6:00PM-7:30PM at the Detroit Main Library. It is open to the public. \nA History Talk with Roland Hwang will be held on Saturday\, October 19\, 1PM-3PM at the Chinese Community Center.  Roland Hwang teaches Asian American history at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. He has also taught at Wayne State University Law School\, Madonna University\, and Cooley Law School.  As the son of two immigrants who left China to do college study in the United States and stayed\, Roland is a lawyer concentrating on immigration. Roland is the secretary and past president of the Association of Chinese Americans. \nThe Transcontinental Railroad was built between 1864 and 1869 to link the western and eastern portions of the US by extending the existing eastern railroad network from outside Omaha to Oakland\, California. It consisted of three major lines of track: Western Pacific\, Central Pacific\, and Union Pacific.   Of about 20\,000 Chinese laborers hired to work on the Transcontinental\, more than half worked on the Central Pacific. On May 10\, 1869\, a celebration marked the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. A golden spike was driven into the final connecting rail at Promontory Summit\, Utah. \nThe  exhibit aims to show not only the immensity of the Transcontinental Railroad project with its monumental physical impact on the western landscape of the US\, but also its social effects\, as migrant workers such as the Chinese\, came\, stayed\, and persevered\, contributing their values and traditions towards a dynamic\, diverse\, and prosperous American nation. \nChinese Railroad Workers Exhibit Series Schedule: \nSeptember 10-October 15 \nDetroit Main Public Library \n5201 Woodward Ave.\, Detroit\, MI 48202 \n        Tuesday\, Thursday\, Saturday\, 10AM-6PM \n        Wednesday\, 12PM-8PM \n        Sunday\, 12PM-5PM \nOpening Reception:  \n        Saturday\, September 11\, 6PM-7:30PM \nFREE ADMISSION \nContact DPL: (313) 833-1000 or visit www.detroitpubliclibrary.org  \nContact ACA: (313) 831-1790\, (248) 585-9343 or www.acadetroit.org \nClick here to view more information. \nOctober 19-20\, 10AM-5PM  \nACA-Chinese Community Center \n32585 Concord Dr.\, Madison Heights\, Mi. 48071 \nHistory Talk: \n          Saturday\, October 19\, 1PM-3PM \nFREE ADMISSION \nContact ACA: (313) 831-1790\, (248) 585-9343 or www.acadetroit.org \nFREE ADMISSION.  Donations appreciated. \nClick here to view more details.
