Ceramics Lecture Two: The Art of Chinese Folk Pottery

April 21, 2018 @ 1:30 am - 3:30 am

Join Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) for part two of the Ceramic Lecture Series: The Art of Chinese Folk Pottery. Moving the spotlight to Chinese folk pottery, the lecture is an oral and visual presentation by Marie Woo – ceramicist, Asian ceramic historian, and conceptual photographer.

Marie Woo was born in Seattle, Washington, received her BA from the University of Washington and her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She currently lives in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Her research collections and creative work have been featured at many shows and have received many awards. Her first retrospective show was held in 2016 at the Robinson Gallery of the Birmingham-Bloomfield Art Center. She is the curator of a travelling exhibition of Chinese folk pottery that has been on tour in the U.S. since 2013 and is now at its last stop at the Frederick Marshall Sculpture Museum in Saginaw, Michigan where it will be on display until May 19, 2018. Her expansive and extended research on Chinese folk pottery (1995-2009) was funded by a grant from the Asian Cultural Council (a Rockefeller Foundation affiliate).

Chinese folk pottery is not well known in the west, but its long due recognition is now threatened by its imminent extinction. China’s rapid modernization has dealt peasant village potters insurmountable setbacks from loss of demand, the consequent closure of village kilns, and the loss of potters to more lucrative opportunities in the city. Ms. Woo, who has immersed herself in the study and collection of Chinese folk pottery for over ten years, offers a rare opportunity to get to know and appreciate Chinese folk pottery in its broad aesthetic diversity. This spans from simple, humble, and functional wares for everyday use, to the contrast of sophisticated imperial ceramics collected in museums and widely published in books.

Ms. Woo will bring sample objects to demonstrate this contrast. She will also give an aesthetic evaluation of ceramic pieces that attendees are invited to bring. Evaluations will be limited to one object per attendee and to the time allotted for the event.

Admission free.

Light refreshments with a sampling of Chinese teas will be served.
