On March 14, 20, and 21, 2024. The Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) recently made a significant contribution to the cultural landscape of Detroit through its support of the new Detroit Chinatown Exhibition at the Detroit Historical Museum. This initiative aimed to enrich the community’s understanding of the rich history and vibrant culture of the Chinese American community in Detroit.

In collaboration with the Detroit Historical Museum, ACA organized a remarkable event that brought together over 170 local community members, including seniors from six senior apartments across Wayne, Oakland, and Washtenaw Counties. Recognizing the importance of accessibility, ACA facilitated transportation and provided Chinese-speaking docents to enhance the participants’ experience as they delved into the captivating narratives of history and culture within the exhibition.

The event made a profound impact on the Chinese American community, offering a unique opportunity to explore the legacy of the two Chinatowns that once thrived in Detroit. Notably, ACA’s Detroit office was once situated in the Second Chinatown, underscoring the organization’s deep-rooted connection to the city’s historical narrative.

As the oldest Chinese American nonprofit organization serving the community since 1972, ACA remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving and promoting the legacy of Chinatown history in Detroit. This event underscores ACA’s ongoing advocacy efforts, as well as its dedication to fostering diversity and cultural awareness within the community.

Looking ahead, ACA reaffirms its pledge to continue advocating for the recognition and celebration of Detroit’s Chinatown history. Through initiatives that promote cultural enrichment and mental health support, ACA remains steadfast in its mission to empower and uplift community members for generations to come.

The success of ACA’s contribution to the Detroit Chinatown Exhibition reflects its enduring impact and long-term commitment to serving the Chinese American community and promoting cultural understanding and appreciation.
