The O.S. Chan awards were established in memory of my grandfather who was an educator in the Guangdong province in China before World War II. Our belief in “Respect for Elders and Education” is essential to preserve our cultural heritage that every overseas Chinese had practiced over the years. Beyond academic excellence, physical abilities, and spiritual gifts are important attributes to be a responsible citizen with critical thinking skills. The Chan family is pleased to sponsor these awards since 2013 to encourage young Chinese Americans heading for college.
Therefore, the three annual awards are intended to recognized graduating High School seniors from the greater Detroit area who have also demonstrated the ability to excel in sports, fine arts, or other creative endeavors. We expect all the awardees and the other scholars will be successful in their future careers and make us proud.
