On September 3, the Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) was delighted to welcome approximately 150 Detroit Pistons staff members to the ACA Chinese Community Center for an afternoon of learning, exploration, and hands-on cultural experiences.
The field trip was part of the Detroit Pistons’ effort to provide their staff with opportunities to see, explore, and experience the rich cultural diversity of Metro Detroit firsthand. ACA was honored to be one of their community destinations and to share the history, heritage, and living traditions of the Chinese American community.
The visit began with Richard Mui, President of ACA, who introduced the history and development of the Chinese community in Metro Detroit. Participants also explored the Detroit Chinatown exhibition, donated by the Detroit Historical Society and now housed at the ACA Chinese Community Center. The exhibition provided an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the people, neighborhoods, businesses, and community life that have shaped Detroit’s Chinese American history.
Following the historical introduction, ACA staff presented an overview of three important elements of Chinese culture—tea, calligraphy, and Tai Chi—providing cultural and historical context before participants moved into the hands-on activities.
The Pistons staff members then divided into groups and rotated through three interactive cultural experiences: Chinese tea tasting, traditional calligraphy, and Tai Chi. ACA staff and volunteers guided the activities, giving participants an opportunity to experience Chinese tea culture, try traditional Chinese brush writing, and learn basic Tai Chi movements.
Throughout the afternoon, guests also enjoyed refreshments and time to socialize, creating a relaxed setting for conversations, questions, and connections with ACA staff and community members.
More than a field trip, the afternoon was an opportunity for cultural exchange and community connection. By visiting a community space, hearing its history, exploring the Detroit Chinatown exhibition, and participating in cultural traditions firsthand, Pistons staff members experienced another dimension of the remarkable cultural diversity that makes Metro Detroit such a vibrant region.
