2017 Dec 11 Senior Presention: New Medicare Card and Home Injury Control

2017 Dec 9 APA-Y youth leadership training program

22 middle and high school students from the metro area participated in this year’s APA-Y Asian American leadership training event, hosted in conjunction with OCA-National. 2017 Dec 3 High School Achievement Award Banquet
The Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) celebrated the achievements of 42 outstanding Asian American high school seniors at the 34th annual High School Achievement Award Banquet at the Chinese Community Center. 9 students were awarded scholarships by ACA, and the Detroit Chinese Engineer Association awarded 6 scholarships. 2017 Dec 2 Noel Night in Midtown
The Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) joined in the Christmas festivities of Midtown Detroit’s 45th annual Noel Night by setting up a Chinese calligraphy booth and passing out custom-designed bookmarks to event-goers. With its Detroit Service Center located at the heart of the event area, ACA is especially proud to participate in this event, promote Chinese culture, and wish all metro-Detroiters a very happy holidays! 2017 Nov 18 Volunteer Appreciation Banquet 

The Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet at the Chinese Community Center in Madison Heights to express heartful thanks to the many volunteers who helped out over the last year. All took part in the celebration with the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, and five volunteers were awarded the highest honor, receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award. 2017 Nov 14 7th Chinese Cuisine Cooking Contest 

The Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) and the Confucius Institute at Wayne State University (CI-WSU) held the 7th Chinese Cuisine Cooking contest at the Central Alliance Church in Detroit. The CI-WSU team won first place, the ACA team won second, the Westland senior apartment won third, and the Schoolcraft Community College team won fourth. 2017 Nov 9 ACA Participated MCN Tobacco Reduction Annual Summit

The Association of Chinese Americans, Michigan Multicultural Network (MCN), and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) held MCN summit in Flint to discuss tobacco use in minority and the harm tobacco products cause in minority communities. Click here for the full article.
 

2017 Oct 27 ACA’s 45th Anniversary Celebration Banquet

Despite chilling wind and rain, over 200 guests attended and joined in celebrating another successful year for ACA. ACA was honored to receive a plaque from the city of Madison Heights for their excellent services to the community delivered by Mayor Hartwell. 2017 Oct 14 ACA Hosted B3 Leadership Summit
The Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) co-hosted the second B3 Leadership Summit with OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates at the Chinese Community Center. For more pictures, click here
 

2017 Aug 29 ACA Hosted DIA’s Asian Gallery Presentation

2017 Aug 26 ACA Healthy Gardening Fair 
ACA held its first Healthy Gardening Fair at the Chinese Community Center. An informational healthy lecture was presented by Prof. Gen Sheng Wu and a DIY home gardening lecture was given by Mr. Hom. A winter melon contest was held and vendors brought their home garden grown vegetables for exhibition and sales. 2017 Aug 19 ACA Canton-Wayne Family Fun Day
ACA held its third annual Family Fun Day at the Canton Heritage Park. Chinese American families from the Great Detroit area gathered at the park to meet old friends, make new friends, enjoy delicious ethnic Chinese food, and participate in various fun games. 2017 July 17 – Aug 4 ACA Successfully Held Chinese Culture Camp in Canton

2017 July 10 – Aug 4 ACA Successfully Held STREAMS Summer Camp in Madison Heights
ACA successfully held STREAMS(Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, Math, and Soft Skills) Summer Camp at Chinese Community Center in Madison Heights. The camp received positive feedback from the campers and their parents for the patient and kind instructors, nutritious, and diverse learning activities.

2017 Aug 3 to 6 ACA Attends OCA National Convention
Representatives from ACA attended OCA’s annual convention held this year in Sacramento, California. As the Detroit chapter of OCA, ACA was presented with the Second Place 2017 Chapter Excellence Award in the category of Programs & Projects. Click to see a recap of the OCA Convention.
 
2017 06 24 Vincent Chin 35th Year Remembrance
About 100 people gathered in remembrance of Vincent Chin, the young Chinese American who was murdered in 1982. The murder and subsequent trail galvanized Asian Americans into action against this horrific hate crime. 2017 06 10 ACA’s Donor Appreciation Lunch
Donors and supporters of the organization were acknowledged at this special lunch. The over 160 people in attendance were thanked and heard testimonials from people who benefited from the programs and services offered by ACA. The guests were entertained with dance performances by the 500 Co-Op Dance Group and the CiCi Dance Group and heard about future plans for ACA. 2017 06 03 Comcast Digital Connectors Program Graduation
We were excited to have 18 middle and high school students graduating from the Comcast Digital Connectors Program. The students learned about digital, media, and financial literacy during the program which ran during the school year. Students completing the 156 class hours and 56 hours of community service received new Dell laptop computers provided by Comcast. 2017 05 27 ACA Participates in Madison Heights Memorial Day Parade
A group of 17 marchers represented ACA at this annual parade held in Madison Heights, Michigan. The American flag donated by Chinese American AMVET Post 85 to ACA was proudly carried during the procession. Click read a full recap with photos in English or a recap with photos in Chinese.
 
2017 04 25 Fraud and Scam Prevention Workshop Held
A fraud and scam prevention workshop was held at ACA’s Detroit Service Center. Seniors were informed of the latest scam cases. Fraud and scam prevention techniques were also discussed.
 
2017 April 24 to May 3 Taiwan Outing
Around 30 people went on this 10-Day/8-Night trip to six major cities in Taiwan on a specially arranged itinerary. Click to see photos from the Taiwan Outing.
 
2017 04 24 Medicare and Medicaid Workshop Held
Eleana Loy represented ACA to bring a Medicare and Medicaid workshop to Hope Community Baptist Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Eleana introduced several Medicare and Medicaid benefits to new immigrants and also helped them to screen their qualifications.
 
2017 04 22 ACA Participates in Comcast Cares Day
ACA was proud to partner with Comcast for a sixth year and participate in Comcast Cares Day. It is the biggest single-day community-wide event nationwide. Volunteers from ACA participated in two projects this year: Motor City Blight Busters in Detroit and Kids Coalition Against Hunger in Plymouth.

2017 04 01 APIA-U Leadership Training
OCA Asian American Advocates brought APIA-U leadership training to Wayne State University (WSU). About 40 students gathered at the WSU Student Center. The students learned about the Asian American historical timeline spanning the 1840s gold rush, through the 1860s railroad building, the 1880s exclusion laws, to the present immigration rhetoric and Muslim ban. The training will equip them to deal with different people after they graduate.

2017 03 25 Career Bridge
ACA organized the first Career Bridge for the community. Career Bridge is a community-oriented career development activity designed for youths and college students. We invited Dr. Su Xiuling to speak on soft skills in the workplace in the seminar for the youth. There were over 10 participating companies providing internships, full-time and part-time positions. The working youths and college students acquired knowledge of soft skills in the workplace and learned how to build a bridge of communication and understanding.

2017 02 04 ACA’s Chinese New Year Banquet
The Year of the Rooster was celebrated by 250 guests at the Golden Harvest Restaurant in Warren, Michigan. The main purpose of this annual banquet is to celebrate Chinese New Year and raise money for the service centers. Former ACA Board Director Bob Rothman was the emcee. The dignitaries and special guests included State Senator Hoon-Yung Hopgood, Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner, Madison Heights Mayor Brian Hartwell, Enroll Michigan Director Dizzy Warren, Governor of Asia-Pacific Board Chairman Xu Junchen. Sponsors Delta Air Lines, Inc., DTE Energy, AARP, and the Council of Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA) were present as well.
 
Guests and sponsor representatives commended ACA for its excellent services and contributions. ACA President Roland Hwang gave a welcome speech. He also introduced Vice President Shenlin Chen, Treasurer Qin Gloria Zhao, Secretary Shung H. (Sue) Sung, Board Directors Sharon Dow, Charles Liu, John Siak, Tess Tchou, and Jay Zheng. ACA also recognized retiring Board Directors Angela Wang Beasinger and Angelina Chin.
 
A ten-course gourmet Chinese banquet was prepared. Lucky red envelopes and raffle prizes were awarded. The top two bidding prizes were international and domestic tickets from Delta Air Lines. The entertainment included Esther Kaufmann singing two Chinese songs. ACA’s Executive Director Yihong (Joyce) Li reported on recent ACA activities and announced the upcoming ACA Lantern Festival.
 
Appreciation and thanks were given to: those who donated raffle items; the committee members and staff who organized the event; event photographers Charles Liu and Xu Jiafan; Chinese calligraphers Chen Jianru, Song Wei, Meng Xiangbo Chunlian; Hans Liu for handing out the lucky envelopes; the Kaufmanns for their performances and DJ services; the line dance group; and Sharon Dow for designing the calendars distributed at the event.

2017 02 01 Detroit Service Center Chinese New Year/Open House
ACA’s Detroit Service Center held its Chinese New Year Open House at its offices inside the Hannan House. Activities included Chinese calligraphy and dumpling making led by volunteers from the Westland apartments. Guests enjoyed a special lunch of Chinese dishes. ACA Vice President and former ACA Executive Director for over 16 years Shenlin Chen also came to the event to join others in celebrating this wonderful holiday. More than 150 guests visited ACA’s Detroit offices. It was the most participants of the year. Next to the annual Noel Night, ACA’s Chinese New Year Open House has become Hannan House’s biggest activity.

2017 01 30 Presentation at Sakura Restaurant
A presentation on the Healthy Michigan Plan, tax scams awareness, and an overview of the Office of Senior Services offered by Macomb Community Action was attended by 19 people. The format of the presentation was a little different from previous presentations. To make it more fun and celebratory, the participants enjoyed dim sum and Chinese dishes, and also played some Chinese riddles. The participants were actively engaged and loved receiving a small bag of candies as a gift for Chinese New Year.
 
2017 01 27 Chinese New Year Celebration at Canton Center
More than 30 seniors gather in the hallway at the Summit on the Park in Canton waiting for the doors of the senior’s activity center to open to celebrate Chinese New Year. Staff and volunteers were busy decorating and preparing the room for the festivities. The activity attracted many guests, promoted Chinese culture and heritage, and was praised by the Summit on the Park Activity Center for Seniors staff. ACA President Roland Hwang and ACA Executive Director Joyce Li also attended the event.
